Raising the Bar on DIY Nail Kits

Suni Lee holds Salon X-tend nail packagesWhether you are catching the Olympic competitions on your coffee break, spending the week fully engulfed in the games, or are obsessively watching highlights every chance you get, you probably know by now that Team USA took gold in women’s gymnastics. Seriously, is there anything these women can’t do? In addition to contributing to the team’s success and the country’s admiration with incredibly impressive performances on the uneven bars and balance beam, two-time Olympian Suni Lee has taken on the role of ambassador for a familiar at-home nail brand.

KISS has announced Lee will be the ambassador for the new Salon X-tend LED Soft Gel System. As an alternative to traditional press-on nails, the new system uses an LED light to create a firmer bond intended to last longer. According to KISS, Lee will be wearing the nails for appearances and even competitions this year.

I had a chance to try out the new system, and while I have absolutely no intention of doing front flips or full twists off of any even or uneven bars while wearing the Salon X-tend nails, in all likelihood, I will wear them to a bar. As someone who fears pretty much all appointments, I love that this nail solution gives wearers the option to apply these nails when they have the time, from the comforts of their home (perhaps while watching the Olympics).

Salon X-tend LED Soft Gel SystemEach Starter Kit includes a sleek, small LED lamp with a USB cable, 30 nails, the gel adhesive, a cleaning wipe, a manicure stick, and a nail file. Being the complete opposite of whatever a gold medalist is in nail care, I read the instructions thoroughly.

After applying a few nails, I found it definitely takes some mat time to get a feel for how much adhesive to use according to the nail size. But, speeding things up, I liked that the “flash cure” step only takes seven seconds to set the position of the nail, which leaves less room for error for those of us with fidgety fingers before the “finish cure.”

There are plenty of style options available for use with the kit. For simple, smart appeal, the design of the almond-shaped Nonsense, French nail tip is a good fit, and the distinct “S,” “M,” or “L” on the side of the packaging makes it easy to identify each style’s length. As for longevity, I haven’t put the nails to the day-in-the-life test yet, but they feel sturdy.

If you’re interested in trying out a new nail strategy, KISS has made it easy. In addition to being available at kissusa.com, the Salon X-tend LED Soft Gel System is available at ULTA Beauty, Target, Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart.

Amy Hamblen

After spending over a decade in New York, Amy Hamblen is still impressively bad at giving directions around the city. Fortunately, not knowing one's exact whereabouts creates the opportunity to stumble into new places, so what she lacks in navigational skills, she makes up for with an abundance of solid happy hour recommendations. Amy is originally from Indiana, and whether or not her years spent covering the food and entertainment scene in NYC has earned her a seat at the table may be debatable, but it's of little consequence — she much prefers a stool at the bar.
