India Lanasia is a designer and creative director based in Philadelphia. She has followed her passion for designing since her early twenties. She started with photography, taking pictures of models and then styling them, which led to creating her own brand in 2023, Marci Berlin.
I sat down with the budding fashion designer to talk about her brand and taking over RISE’s NYFW showcase.
What was the aha moment that sparked your move over to designing?
I was in my early twenties and watching others like myself, but I didn’t get started with designing until 2020. I was completely self-taught. I enjoy learning about the history and construction of fashion. I think the code to life is to learn from somebody who has gone through it. I knew I wanted a brand that spoke to what helped me in life to break down that generational barrier.
Tell me more about the Marci Berlin brand.
I just launched it in 2023.
You create lines for men, women, and children and now you are venturing into footwear. What made you decide to get into footwear?
Yes, because you need something to wear with your outfit. But no footwear yet.
What is your favorite item to wear from your line?
Tommy Biker Jacket.
What is your career defining moment thus far?
Being featured in a lineup for a New York fashion show.
Are there any other fashion endeavors on the horizon?
Yes, I’m doing more shows and looking forward to going over to the UK.
