Sustainable Strands: The Rootist Hair Care

Developing a hair care routine is a very personal process. Like skin, everyone’s hair is different and can benefit from certain products. That’s why Farmacy Beauty founder David C. Chung launched a brand new hair care line catering to the health of our roots – The Rootist.

Launching in February 2024, The Rootist features the innovative Rootbiomic Ferment™, a process rich in clinically effective proteins, botanical roots, and nutrient-dense mushrooms, which are transformed through fermentation into biologically compatible micronutrients. In other words – it’s game changing for hair health.

Bottled shampoo often is made up of at least 75-85% water. While un harmful, sometimes water just isn’t enough to solve our hair’s problems. The Rootist takes hair care to another level, having no water in their products, and are completely concentrated in hair-loving ingredients. Not only clean, vegan, cruelty-free, sulfate, and silicone-free, but the brand is committed to sustainability and biodegradable practices.

The new line has 6 products – and I was pleased to try all of them! Here is a roundup, featuring my favorites of the bunch.

Strengthen Concentrated Shampoo & Conditioner ($30-$32)

My first favorites from the line are the shampoo and conditioner duo. As previously mentioned, they are concentrated with no water. What does this mean? You only need to use half the amount of product. Sustainable and effective, the scent is reminiscent of eucalyptus, but isn’t overwhelming. They gently eliminate any need to double shampoo – my hair felt full and clean after only one wash. The duo will last you a long time (especially if you have short hair) as its concentration should keep your hair fresh for at least 2-3 days.

Clarifying Balancing Serum for Oily Scalp ($48, 1 fl oz)

When I see salicylic acid on an ingredient list, I lean forward.  I was excited, yet intrigued to try this serum, as SA is one of my favorite ways to exfoliate and eliminate smell, particularly on the skin. Similar to facial serums, this clarifying hair serum controls excess oil production, which prolongs the need to cleanse the scalp. It’s also formulated with chlorella to calm any irritation. As someone with oily skin, this was an absolute standout I highly recommend.

Dry Shampoo Powder ($26)

To round out the favorite trio is the dry shampoo powder. I don’t know about you, but I’m used to cheap aerosol cans to clean my hair on the go. The talc-free powder formulation makes application so much more feasible as you aren’t using excess product. It also has Upsalite (magnesium carbonate) which blends into the hair flawlessly, providing more time in between hair washes. This is true sustainability!

AHA+ACV Pre-Shampoo Scalp Clarifying Rinse ($32)

If you are someone who likes to pre-shampoo in their hair hare routine, look no further than the scalp clarifying rinse. It’s designed for all hair types, especially oily, and is formulated with AHAs and apple cider vinegar to safely exfoliate without compromising hair moisture or texture. It is certainly the foundation to a healthy root and a great first step in the cleansing process.

BioBrew™ Fermented Strengthening Serum ($48)

Arguably, the star of the line is the strengthening serum. It’s made to solve it all – repairing roots, scalp, and hair, all in one bottle. This is the product for the damaged girls, as the BioBrew™ has science-backed evidence showing its effectiveness to reduce breakage, control frizz, improve shine, and shield from heat 3x more than other products. I’m saving this liquid gold for when I inevitably damage my hair in the future, and can’t wait to see the results!

If that wasn’t convincing enough, I encourage you to try The Mini Trial Kit, which includes the travel sized pre-shampoo, concentrated shampoo & conditioner, and the strengthening serum. (It’s currently on sale for $25!)

The Rootist is exclusively available at Sephora and on their official website.
